Model a realistic loss

Ask for quotes at two deductible levels and record the premium difference. Compare that saving with the extra cash you would need if a claim happened soon. Some water or catastrophe coverages may use a different deductible, so read each schedule line carefully.

Keep the decision affordable

An extremely high deductible can make a smaller claim uneconomic for your household even if the premium is lower. Set aside funds for the amount you choose. The estimate calculator does not ask for a deductible, making a quote comparison necessary.

Ask about a water deductible

A home quote may show one general deductible but a different amount for a particular water event. Ask the representative to point to each number on the policy schedule. Compare the premium saving from a higher general deductible with the cash you would need after a realistic claim.
