Record what you own
Walk through each room and photograph or video important items. Note make, model, approximate purchase date and cost where practical. Keep receipts or appraisals for valuable possessions. A cloud copy or another safe off-site backup helps if the home itself is damaged.
Check policy limits
Compare your inventory with the contents limit and any special caps for jewellery, cash, collections or business equipment. Ask if replacement cost or actual cash value applies. Update the record after major purchases or moves rather than waiting until a loss occurs.
A ten-minute starting method
Walk through the rooms with your phone and record a slow video showing larger belongings, inside closets and serial numbers where practical. Later, attach receipts for expensive purchases and store a copy somewhere secure. The first version need not be perfect to be more useful than relying on memory after a loss.
Quick check
- Photograph each room
- Save receipts securely
- Review item sublimits
