Tell the insurer about the situation
Vacant and temporarily unoccupied may have different definitions. Explain whether the property is between tenants, listed for sale, under renovation or simply empty during travel. Ask for the policy's exact reporting deadlines and protective measures; do not rely on a generic number of days from another company's policy.
Check water and security duties
Insurers may require inspections, heat maintenance, water shutoff or other steps while you are away. Get conditions in writing and keep inspection records. The site calculator assumes ordinary occupancy and cannot estimate a special vacancy policy.
Between tenants
If a rental property sits empty for several weeks, tell the insurer the anticipated dates and how often someone will inspect it. Ask what the policy calls this situation and whether any water or theft conditions change. Keep a dated record of checks rather than assuming the normal occupied-home terms still apply.
