Prepare before leaving
Check the forecast and road reports, clear all windows and lights, make sure washer fluid and winter tires suit the conditions, and carry a charged phone and emergency supplies. Consider delaying the trip if visibility or road conditions are poor. Transport Canada recommends winter tires on all wheels for cold, snowy or icy conditions.
Give yourself room on the road
Drive at a speed appropriate for traction, leave more following distance and steer and brake smoothly. Avoid abrupt lane changes through slush. If you cannot see well, find a safe place to stop rather than pressing on. Good tires improve grip but cannot make an icy road risk-free.
A departure decision
If freezing rain is expected along the route, check official road information before starting and consider postponing. If conditions deteriorate after departure, choose a safe exit or rest area. Being on time does not justify continuing when you cannot see the road clearly.
