The public part

Québec’s public automobile insurance plan addresses bodily injury resulting from road accidents. It is administered by the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ), with a contribution associated with the driver’s licence. The amount shown in a private insurer’s car policy does not represent the entire public-and-private system.

The private part

Vehicle owners also need civil liability insurance from a private insurer for property damage and certain situations involving injury outside Québec. Optional protections can cover damage to your own vehicle, subject to the coverage purchased. The insurer’s quote depends on the vehicle, driver, use, location, limits and deductible.

Using the calculator in Québec

Choose Québec on our calculator for a broad private-policy planning range. It does not calculate the public contribution associated with a licence, verify your legal minimum coverage, or compare insurer prices. For those details, consult the Autorité des marchés financiers and your insurer.

If you drive for pay

Tell your insurer if the vehicle is used for rideshare or delivery. App coverage, personal coverage and commercial use can interact in ways that a short calculator cannot assess. Confirm in writing when each coverage applies before accepting paid trips.
