Understand what is detected
Depending on the vehicle, sensors may show a mirror light or sound an alert when another vehicle is beside you. Transport Canada notes that the monitoring range varies and some systems may miss motorcycles or fast-approaching traffic. A camera or warning does not replace mirror and shoulder checks.
Maintain the system
Read the owner's manual, keep sensors clean and note whether rain, snow or damage affects operation. If a warning indicates a fault, have it inspected. When comparing vehicles, try the feature safely and ask which trim includes it rather than assuming all versions have the same equipment.
Changing lanes beside a motorcycle
A motorcycle may approach quickly or sit outside the sensor's effective area. Signal, check mirrors and make a shoulder check even when the blind-spot light is off. If snow covers the sensor, do not treat silence from the system as proof the lane is clear.
