Look beyond the new price
Check listed drivers, vehicle use, garaging address, annual distance, liability limits, optional damage coverages and deductibles. Review any change notices or endorsements. If the quote rises, ask for an explanation instead of assuming every line of coverage increased equally.
Shop on a comparable basis
Request alternative quotes before the renewal date, allowing time to review them. Match coverages and effective dates. Do not cancel the existing policy until the replacement is confirmed in force, and ask about refunds or cancellation charges if you switch mid-term.
A month before renewal
Open the current policy and new notice side by side. Highlight changes in the premium, coverage limits, deductible and listed drivers. Ask whether any discount expired and get comparison quotes before the renewal deadline. A policy that renewed automatically can still have terms worth reviewing.
