Think about the potential loss

Ask about theft, fire, vandalism, weather and glass terms rather than relying on the word “comprehensive.” Check the deductible, exclusions and settlement basis. The value of the vehicle and your ability to pay for a replacement both matter when deciding whether to buy optional protection.

Compare the real extra premium

Request quotes with and without the coverage while leaving other details unchanged. If financing is involved, confirm lender requirements first. Also ask whether a particular risk needs a separate endorsement. An annual saving is meaningful only when you understand what you are giving up.

A decision for a parked car

If a car is mostly parked outdoors, you may be concerned about theft, hail or falling objects. Ask for a quote with the appropriate damage coverage and read which of those events it addresses. Compare the extra premium and deductible with the vehicle's current value and your ability to replace it.
