Identify the gaps

Ask about damage to the rental vehicle, liability, loss-of-use charges, deductibles and permitted vehicle types. Coverage under a personal policy can vary by province and endorsement; credit-card protections may have conditions, exclusions and maximum rental periods.

Bring documentation

Request written coverage details from your insurer and card issuer before the trip. Check who can drive and whether travel outside Canada is included. A rental company's optional product may be useful in some circumstances, but compare its terms rather than buying or refusing it automatically.

Before the rental counter

Call your insurer and card provider while you still have the rental agreement terms in front of you. Ask if the selected car class, trip length and destination qualify. Keep a written summary or policy link, so a hurried decision at the counter is based on actual protection rather than assumptions.
